Is the rubber inside the filter basket purely there to stop water from flowing under the filter plate without extracting the coffee?

The perforated filter with the rubber surround is there as a seal, but the true benefit is it also offers greater durability and ease of cleaning. It is recommended to clean the filters regularly and as this is removable it makes things much easier for the normal user.
