Voor het effectief instellen van een luchtontvochtiger moet je eerst de grootte van de ruimte bepalen. De meeste luchtontvochtigers zijn voorzien van verstelbare vochtigheidsinstellingen. Deze kunnen worden versteld op basis van persoonlijk comfort en de huidige luchtvochtigheid. Daarnaast speelt de grootte van de ruimte een cruciale rol in het selecteren van de juiste luchtontvochtiger. Voor grotere ruimtes is een krachtigere eenheid nodig, terwijl compacte modellen doorgaans krachtig genoeg zijn voor kleinere ruimtes. Luchtontvochtigers en aircondioners hebben verschillende functies. maar beide dragen bij aan een comfortabele binnenomgeving. Airconditioners zijn voornamelijk luchtverkoelers. Aan de andere kant zijn luchtontvochtigers specifiek gericht op het verlagen van het vochtniveau, zonder de temperatuur te verlagen. Als je hoofdzakelijk last hebt van een hoge luchtvochtigheid, dan is een luchtontvochtiger de ideale keuze. Als je last hebt van een warme en vochtige ruimte kan een airconditioner met ontvochtigingsfuncties een totaaloplossing vormen.
